Toxic Ash & Domoic Acid Poisoning
2025 has not been an easy year for wildlife so far. Toxic ash is an ongoing problem, with contaminants like heavy metal, plastics, lead, and asbestos from the Eaton and Palisades fires having been swept out to sea. These contaminants directly impact wildlife--but they also may have caused a surge in the growth of Pseudo-nitzschia algae, which produces domoic acid. As domoic acid moves up the food chain in larger concentrations, marine mammals and seabirds alike are suffering toxic side effects.

Our mission is to educate the public about human impact on the environment and mitigate that impact through care and rehabilitation of native wildlife. WWCC is open 365 days a year. |
